Level 2 EV Charger Installation: What KC Homeowners Need to Know
Thinking about a home EV charger? Here's everything you need — costs, permit requirements, panel capacity, and which chargers work best in Kansas City.
Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly common across the Kansas City metro — and most EV owners quickly realize that charging at home beats hunting for a public charger every time.
Here's what Kansas City homeowners need to know about Level 2 EV charger installation.
Level 1 vs Level 2: What's the Difference?
Level 1 uses your standard 120V outlet — the one already in your garage. It charges about 3–5 miles of range per hour. For most EV drivers, that's too slow.
Level 2 uses a dedicated 240V circuit — the same voltage as your dryer or electric range. It charges 20–35 miles of range per hour. Most EV batteries can be fully charged overnight.
For daily driving, Level 2 is the right choice. It's what Pure Light Electric installs.
How Much Does Installation Cost?
Residential Level 2 EV charger installation costs depend on several factors:
- Distance from your electrical panel to the garage
- Whether your panel has available capacity (if not, a panel upgrade may be needed)
- The charger hardware you choose (we're brand-agnostic)
- Permit fees (required in most KC jurisdictions — we handle this)
Do You Need a Panel Upgrade?
Not necessarily. Many homes have enough spare capacity to add a 40–50 amp circuit for an EV charger without touching the main panel. We assess your current load as part of every charger estimate.
If a panel upgrade is needed, we'll tell you honestly — and if you're also adding a dryer circuit or other loads, doing it all at once usually makes sense.
Which Charger Should You Buy?
We're brand-agnostic. Here are the most popular options:
- Tesla Wall Connector — best for Tesla owners, slightly limited for other brands
- ChargePoint Home Flex — works with all EVs, excellent app, adjustable amperage
- JuiceBox Pro — reliable, good features, competitive price
- NEMA 14-50 Outlet — no dedicated charger, just a 50-amp outlet — works with most EVs' included cord set, maximum flexibility
The Federal Tax Credit
The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit (30C) allows homeowners to claim 30% of EV charger installation costs as a federal tax credit. This applies to both the hardware and labor through 2032.
